Belgrade, after dark

Floating clubs on the Danube. Underground techno. Cheap.

The splavovi (river rafts on the Sava and Danube) are the experience nobody else has. The underground techno scene at Drugstore and other venues goes deeper than the rest of the Balkans. Cheap, late, raw, and increasingly travelled.

Where to stay in Belgrade

Stay in Savamala if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. Vračar is the mid-range play — ten minutes by transit, better hotels for the money, locals at the bar after midnight. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.

Before you go to Belgrade

Photo discretion at the splav strip. The Sava-river floating clubs are camera-shy by convention — phones down at Freestyler and at the Hot Mess door.

Carry cash, mostly euros. Splav clubs and the older Skadarlija bars run on cash. Dinar is fine but euros simplify negotiation. ATMs at Komercijalna or Intesa branches; skip the bus-station machines.

Night trams run 00:30-04:00 covering the centre. Use CarGo or Bolt after — both work. Never the unmarked taxis at the train station or outside the splavs.

Overcharging at the splavs is the most common avoidable problem — bill addition errors are common after the second hour. Verify each round and pay each round.

Improving but still complicated. Pleasure Bar and the smaller Karaburma scene are the anchors. Same-sex marriage NOT legal — no partnership recognition. Belgrade Pride happens (since 2014) but with police presence. PDA in the splav strip is fine for the late hour; daylight in the Centar is patchier.

From the field

Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
