Taipei, after dark

Xinyi for the clubs. Ximending for the youth. Hostess bars in between.

Xinyi is the club district. Ximending is the youth scene. The hostess-bar and KTV culture sits between them. The night markets stay open until you’re done, and the indie live-music venues are quietly excellent.

Where to stay in Taipei

Stay in Xinyi if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. Da'an is the mid-range play — ten minutes by transit, better hotels for the money, locals at the bar after midnight. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.

Before you go to Taipei

Don't photograph the Linsen North hostess facades. The unmarked storefronts north of Civic Boulevard are camera-shy by convention. Phones down on the lanes around Linsen North Road.

Carry cash for the night markets and Linsen bars. Cards work in the major venues; the night-market food and the older bars don't. ATMs at Cathay United or any 7-Eleven are foreign-friendly.

MRT closes 00:00 (01:00 on Friday/Saturday). Use Uber or LINE TAXI after — both work. The street taxis are honest and metered; English is patchy past 23:00 — have the address in Mandarin.

Drink-spiking in the Linsen North side bars is the most-reported avoidable problem. Verify the bottle, watch the pour, and pace yourself — the rounds are designed to lose count.

East Asia's most LGBTQ-friendly capital. Ximending and the Red House area are the centre — Café Dalida, Commander D. Same-sex marriage legal since 2019, the first in Asia. Pride is the last Saturday of October, the largest in Asia. PDA is unremarkable in central Taipei; trans care is mainstream and covered by national insurance.

From the field

Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
