Zurich, after dark
Langstrasse. Sex boxes. Premium-priced everything.
Langstrasse is the one neighbourhood that breaks the Swiss-orderly mood — the regulated industry, the dive bars, the clubs, all in a few blocks. The municipal sex-box facility on the outskirts is one-of-a-kind. Everything closes at 4 and costs 50% more than it should, but the quality is there.
Where to stay in Zurich
Stay in Kreis 1 if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. Kreis 5 is the mid-range play — ten minutes by transit, better hotels for the money, locals at the bar after midnight. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.
Before you go to Zurich
Discretion at the Langstrasse strip. Photography in the regulated district is socially policed by the bar staff. Phones down between Stauffacher and the Langstrasse-Rosengarten corner.
Carry a card; cash is optional. Switzerland is card-first. The smaller Langstrasse bars still take cash and a few only take cash — small franc notes, not euros.
Last tram 00:30; the N-bus network runs Friday and Saturday until 04:00. Use Uber after; the regulated taxi system is reliable but two-to-three times the Uber rate. Trams are the standard.
Overpaying is the main avoidable problem in Zurich, not safety. The high-end venues are price-honest; the back-street ones tier prices for tourists. Verify before the second round.
Open, regulated, low-drama. Niederdorf and the Langstrasse mixed scene cover it. Same-sex marriage since 2022. Zurich Pride is mid-June. The Langstrasse adult-services district is mixed-orientation; the historic gay village around Zähringerplatz is small but established.
From the field
Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
